War Nickels
Now that I am squirreling away rolls of nickels, there is a small possibility that a WW2 silver nickel might turn up. I don't want to sort through each roll looking for them, so is it possible to spot them edge-on? Do they have a distinct appearance?

I think they are darker than the others- so you can edge search and pull out the darker ones and check. HH Mark

Re: War Nickels
I just pulled out an old Whitman albumn that my 89yr. old neighbor just gave me last week.....and I can tell you that the two posts above are correct.
The mintmark is above the Monticello, not to the right of it...... And they do appear more tonned.....some leadish grey, some more golden. |
Re: War Nickels
*sigh*
I just found one in a roll I got at the bank. Now I'm hooked. *sigh* :D |
Re: War Nickels
I got one in my change a few months ago, which was my first ever score of free silver. I would say it's probably worth your time to sort through them, but if you're planning on holding the nickels for a while, there's no rush. But once silver hits triple digits, you'll have a little more incentive to pick through them than you do now!:bull-buddy-icon:

Re: War Nickels
All the ones I have look like they are made of lead. Although if you rub them on your pant leg, they start to look more normal.

Re: War Nickels
I went through a box of nickels once. I found one in the box. You will find quite a few older nickels in there too, but the war nickels seem to be fairly rare.
I had much better luck with half dollars. Something like 3 90% and 10 40% in a box. It's just a pain to get your bank to get you a box of halves. |
Re: War Nickels
My recent half-dollar prospecting has gottn me zilch. War nickels are more obscure. And the fact that they are worth over a dollar per is good incentive to sort.

Re: War Nickels
My first War nickel came in my pocket change a few years back.
What brought it to my attention was the different colorization as if the alloys weren't properly mixed. The silver stood out like a sore thumb! Also know this, there is more silver in 2 War Nickels than in 1 pre-65' dime. Here are a couple of resources that may help (if you haven't used them already): http://www.coinflation.com/ http://www.apmex.com/Product/13023/1...35_Silver.aspx Have fun. Maranatha, |
